The Marais d'Orx nature reserve
Situated in the heart of the Landes region, the Réserve Naturelle du Marais d’Orx is an unspoilt sanctuary offering an extraordinary natural spectacle. Created under Napoleon III and transformed into a rich ecosystem, this major ornithological site invites visitors to discover exceptional biodiversity. Formerly a polder drained for agricultural purposes, the marsh has been transformed into a vital conservation area for numerous species. Between land and water, this ecological site near our Biscarrosse campsite is a must for nature lovers and birdwatchers alike.

The history of the Marais d’Orx
The history of the Marais d’Orx is marked by a remarkable transformation, beginning in the 19th century under the reign of Napoleon III. Initially, this vast area was a polder, an expanse of land reclaimed from the water, destined for agriculture thanks to an ambitious reclamation project. This metamorphosis of the landscape was intended to exploit the land for crops and livestock, profoundly altering the local ecosystem. Over time, however, awareness of the ecological importance of these wetlands led to a significant change of direction. In 1995, the Marais d’Orx was officially recognized as a nature reserve, marking the beginning of an era dedicated to preserving and restoring its original biodiversity. This turning point illustrates the evolution of our relationship with the environment, underlining the importance of protecting these unique spaces for future generations.

The feathered inhabitants of the marsh include numerous species of birds, some of which are rare and protected. Birdwatchers can admire purple herons, storks and white spoonbills in their natural habitat. The Marais d’Orx nature reserve is also an important wintering site for anatidae, offering a lively and changing spectacle in tune with the seasons.
The flora is not to be outdone, with a variety of plants adapted to the specific environment of wetlands. From swaying reeds to water lilies emerging from calm waters, each element contributes to the marsh’s ecological balance. These green spaces serve as refuge and feeding grounds for wildlife, playing a crucial role in the food chain and species reproduction.
The management of the Marais d’Orx aims to preserve this biological diversity, through conservation and awareness-raising actions, in order to maintain this natural heritage for present and future generations.
