An emblematic environment that has evolved over time
Formed by the invasion of sea sands in the 6th century, Lac d’Aureilhan extends over four communes: Mimizan, Aureilhan, Saint Paul en Born and Sainte-Eulalie en Born. It measures 340 ha and stretches over 3.5 km. The lake is one of several in the northern Landes region. The lakes are linked by currents. Being the lowest and most southerly, Lac d’Aureilhan-Mimizan receives all the water from the lakes of Cazaux – Sanguinet, Parentis – Biscarrosse. This body of water then flows into the ocean 7 km to the west through an arm of water. This is known as the Courant de Mimizan. The site is also an excellent refuge for many migratory birds.
Lac d’Aureilhan: a lively vacation full of passion
Lovers of nature and outdoor activities will find plenty to do on the Lac d’Aureilhan site. Indeed, you can opt for one of the guided tours offered by theOffice Intercommunal de Tourisme de Mimizan. These tours run from June to the end of September.
The Promenade Fleurie is one of the region’s jewels in the crown. Located in a cove of the lake, it boasts over 300 varieties of plants. Fishing enthusiasts can tease the fish on this stretch of water on foot or by boat. As for the little ones, they can discover the lake in a playful way along the Terra Aventura geocaching trail.
Water sports activities are so varied that holidaymakers will be spoilt for choice: from stand-up paddle to canoe to Hawaiian pirogue. With its 9-hole golf course, cycle path, accrobranche and paintball circuit, this site offers a concentration of activities for young and old alike.
Le tour du lac: what you need to know about this route
To get to and around Lac d’Aureilhan, you can take a circuit that lasts a minimum of 3 hours 30 minutes, starting from Aureilhan. The loop runs in a clockwise direction over a total distance of 13.5 km.
Walkers wishing to adopt this walking circuit must acquire the topoguide available from the Office Intercommunal de Tourisme de Mimizan, which costs €2. A comfortable pair of shoes is required. Water and a cap are also essential. Dogs must be kept on a leash and must follow the signposted circuit.
It would be advantageous to know that in winter, this circuit can be, in part, muddy. In this case, it’s advisable to wear boots to protect yourself from puddles that are difficult to get around. You’ll also need a camera to take good shots. Discover this natural site from your campsite near Mimizan.
