Le Teich ornithological park
Le Teich ornithological reserve
In the late 1960s, a group of ornithologists determined that the Arcachon Basin had great potential for hosting birds, but was inactive due to the lack of reserve areas on its maritime shores. They then proposed to the Teich town council the creation of a bird park modelled on the Zwin in Belgium. So they created the Réserve Ornithologique du Teich.
We can clearly see 3 types of landscape. Water is everywhere in the park, covering 3/4 of the territory. The wide-open spaces and shallow saltwater levels, punctuated by short, adaptive vegetation, offer visitors an open horizon for breathtaking views.
The sun and summer heat make you feel like you’re in a salt marsh. Whether man-made or spontaneous, forests occupy the southern edge of the reserve.
Oaks and gray willows live here, depending on soil moisture. These forests grow naturally, without any particular management practices, but preserve their wild side and help to promote biodiversity. In warm weather, they offer cool, shady itineraries for visitors.
It is dedicated toecotourism, the conservation of wild bird species, vegetation management and the education of students of all levels.
