The Pilat Dune
La Dune du Pilat: life in the desert
Facing Cap Ferret, the Dune du Pilat ‘s exceptional size makes it one of the region’s major tourist attractions. Its location at the mouth of the Arcachon Basin means that a variety of natural tidal deposits can be found at its foot. As a result, algae and animal remains are often found in the water. The fauna on the Dune du Pilat is quite varied. In fact, many birds come here to feed.
The desert nature of the dune has not prevented certain plants from taking shelter there. They are exceptionally adaptable. The sandy nature of the dune has made it ideal for water-hardy vegetation such as oyat, sand couch grass and sea panicum. The wealth of flora and fauna makes this natural monument the most visited site in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
